we believe in the power of home
Birds know all about finding their way home. Think of the tiny arctic tern, who makes a 44,000 mile round trip annually during migration. Or an eagle, who returns to the same aerie year after year. The nests of terns and eagles are very different — but they both mean home.
Unlike most birds, people aren’t just born with the knowledge we need to find a nest. Finding home can be a little more complicated for us humans, with our opposable thumbs and complex economy. That’s where Readynest comes in.
Buying your first home (or your fourth home, or even your summer home) can be daunting. We’re here to break down the process for you in plain English, so you feel ready to spread your wings. We hope our tips, tools and stories will help you find, afford and love a home of your own.
Readynest is brought to you by MGIC, a private mortgage insurance company that has been helping people find a better way to homeownership for more than 60 years. We believe that homeownership improves lives – physically, financially and emotionally. While we fully admit we’re a little biased in thinking that private mortgage insurance is a great way to get there, we want to help you get there in whatever way works best for you!
And our writers? We're a blend of long-time homeowners, new homeowners and renters with aspirations to homeownership. Our stories are driven by research and seasoned with personal experience. We hope you’ll learn from our mistakes and our successes, and share with us your own journeys home.
Liz / Editor
Homeowner since 2012
Attracted her mate via song
Jealous of screened-in porches
Liz Keuler is the editor of Readynest. She spent a decade meandering through radio, nonprofits and the corporate world before convincing MGIC to hire her based on her staunch grammatical convictions. She lives in a charming 100-year-old bungalow on Milwaukee’s East Side. Her interests include old Ernst Lubitsch films, new action movies, 60s girl pop, Regency romance novels, word games, sewing and shallots.
Zak / Writer + social media guy
Homeowner since 2021
Dances like a bird of paradise
Needs to clean his room
Zak Stoiber is a digital marketing program specialist at MGIC who enjoys reading books, some of which do not contain pictures. He recently became a homeowner mostly to house his board game collection.
Shelley / Writer
Homeowner since 2012
Dangerously addicted to sunflower seeds
Philosophically opposed to nonfunctional window shutters
Shelley Sines has been writing for MGIC since she graduated from college in 2007. Currently raising a sweet little family with her husband in the suburbs of Milwaukee. Happiest when cooking or gardening. Competitive Scrabble player. Enthusiastic about road trips, wine, good TV.
Julie / Writer
Homeowner since 1987
Loves listening to doves
Craves a big kitchen island
Julie Tramonte is a writer who joined MGIC in 2018. Prior to flying the coop, she wrote for a mattress company, a manufacturer and advertising agencies. She’s obsessed with reading, traveling, tennis and rearranging furniture. Mother of 2 beautiful, adult daughters. Empty nester who recently downsized. Her guilty pleasures are doughnuts and the Kardashians (don’t tell anyone).
Vance / Writer
Homeowner since 1998
Like the eagle, has been bald for too long
Swaps out wife’s garden flag with an OSU flag when she isn’t looking
Vance Edwards has been working to help get people into homes since joining MGIC back in 1999, after brief tours in the Army, college and a Milwaukee advertising company. He’s bought 3 homes (and sold 2) along the way, using them with his wife Carrie to raise 2 remarkable children, Hailey and Trevan. Vance loves baseball at any level, is part of a comedy sketch & improv team, and has won national playwriting awards.
Emily / Designer
Homeowner since 2015
Plumage patterns vary
Thinks rose colored bathtubs are for the birds
Emily Whaling has an eye for color (pink, in particular), shape and space. Good thing because she’s our website’s graphic designer. She came to MGIC in 2005 with a hatbox for a portfolio; we glommed on to her and haven’t let her go.
John / Illustrator
Homeowner since 2008
Collects bits of string
Loves a high baseboard
John Munroe is a graphic designer and illustrator for MGIC, and the proud owner of a small vintage paint-by-number collection. John can get lost for hours in a John Singer Sargent painting or a trashy Douglas Preston novel. He makes a darn good roast chicken but is still searching for the perfect chicken satay with peanut sauce (recommendations welcome).
Rebecca / Web producer
Homeowner since 2011
Can’t sit still, like a hummingbird
Makes furniture purchases based on the dogs’ needs
Rebecca Arnell specializes in the web and user experience side of things. She joined MGIC in 2013 and has helped launch several new websites, like Readynest. She owns a home in a suburb of Milwaukee with her husband and two greyhounds. (Though really, the dogs own the home.) Rebecca enjoys traveling, exercise, and lecturing at a local university. If it’s something productive and active, Rebecca probably likes doing it!
Jason / Videographer
Homeowner since 2010
Feels hawkward in group settings
If a house has fresh coffee he calls it home
Jason Krukowski is a designer at MGIC, an artist at night, Elvis at conventions, and a Jedi on the weekends. He loves photography and can often be found with his camera in hand wandering the streets of Milwaukee for the next best picture. His most frequent muse is Iggy, his cat. After a long, hard day at work he and his wife spend quality time discussing deep matters like who will win "The Bachelor."
